What
does the tuition for the program include?
The
course fee is $750 including free accommodation during the
course in Thailand. Deposit payment is $500 which is
non-refundable.
How do
I need to pay for the course?
It is simple. You just need to make your payment by using your
credit card through paypal, which is the safest mode of online
payment. In case you don’t have a credit card, just write back
to us, we will send you the wire transfer details or Western
Union Money transfer details.
What is an average
program day like?
Our Special TESOL Project in Thailand is an extensive 3 weeks course. Classes
begin sharp at 9:00 in the morning and extend till 4:45 pm, with mid morning,
lunch and afternoon breaks. The program is normally conducted Monday to Friday,
but additional classes may be organized on 1 or 2 Saturdays also.
Do I have a choice
of city and school?
ATI tries its best to
make both the counters happy. But, it is usually difficult to perfectly match
the school and the teacher, satisfying the needs and conditions of both sides.
Schools often set criterions related to age, sex, experience, behavior, looks of
the teachers and the parameters vary from school to school. Moreover, higher
qualification fetches finer options. Therefore, teachers are recommended to be
flexible while stating their preferences and supporting reasons. The sooner that
you can commit, the better your chances will be of acquiring a position that you
desire.
Can I bring my
laptop with me? Will I get internet facilities in the accommodation provided
during the TESOL course in Thailand?
Yes surely you can bring your laptop with you. You may not get internet
connection at your accommodation. But Cyber Cafes are strewed all over the major
Thai cities helping you to stay conveniently connected.
Why this special

How does the
accommodation like in Thailand during the course?
American TESOL Institute provides well-equipped accommodation for teacher
trainees during the training, free of cost. (Single Occupancy). The private
rooms are air-conditioned with attached bathroom. Each room has Television with
International channels, hot and cold water, Refrigerator. Bed sheet and towels
will be changed every 7 days.
Will you pick me up
from the airport? Is pick up and drop facility is available from the
accommodation to the training school?
Yes we will pick you up from Airport to the TESOL training site at free of cost.
You just need to email us beforehand the landing time.
We do have regular pick up and drop facility.
Food is also
provided during the course?
No. You have to arrange for your own food. Food is really cheap in Thailand and
you will get plenty of eateries scattered across the town serving sumptuous food
at cheap rates. So, getting food will not be a problem in Thailand.
Questions about living in South Korea
Will I be able to
save money while working in South Korea?
Yes, infact South Korea is an affordable country to live in. where the ESL
teachers have the utmost potential to earn and save than any other countries in
Asia. However lot will depend on your lifestyle. But the salary and perks you
will be getting is more than enough to live a luxurious life in South Korea.
What’s the climate
like? What kind of clothing will I need to bring?
South Korea is a part of the East Asian monsoonal region; South Korea has a
temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The movement of air masses from
the Asian continent exerts greater influence on South Korea's weather than does
air movement from the Pacific Ocean. Winters are usually long, cold, and dry,
whereas summers are short, hot, and humid. Spring and autumn are pleasant but
short in duration. Seoul's mean temperature in January is -5° C to - 2.5° C; in
July the mean temperature is about 22.5° C to 25° C. Because of its southern and
seaside location, Jeju Island has warmer and milder weather than other parts of
South Korea. Mean temperatures on Jeju range from 2.5° C in January to 25° C in
July. South Korea is less vulnerable to typhoons. Typhoons usually pass over
South Korea in late summer, especially in August, and bring torrential rains.
Flooding occasionally causes considerable damage.
What kind of
clothing will I need to bring?
Although most people prefer Western clothes like suits and jeans, the national
costume, hanbok, is worn by many during national holidays. Traditionally, people
wore white clothes, reserving colors for the upper class or during festive
occasions. Rubber shoes and sandals have been replaced by designer shoes and
sneakers; however, even these are removed when entering a house or other area

What if I get sick
in South Korea?
If you find yourself requiring medical attention, South Korea has a number of
very good international standards of hospitals, very well equipped with all the
modern facilities and medical centers with well-educated, helpful doctors.
If there is any serious injury, please inform the school authority or one of the
staff and transportation will be provided to Hospital for treatment.
What’s the public
transportation system like?
There is no shortage of options if you want to travel in South Korea.
There are numerous internal flights between Gwangju, Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Daegu
and other major cities with over 30 airports in South Korea.
There is an extensive domestic flight network operated by the national airline,
Korean Air and other Airlines.
Most towns in South Korea can be reached by an adequate system of roads.
Driving License & vehicle documents must be carried at all times and you will
need to bring your own national
driving license if planning to drive in South Korea.
Several leading car hire companies operates in South Korea.
Main cities of South Korea are connected by Buses and privately run coach
services.
Trains in South Korea are operated by Korean National Railroads. Trains are
cheap, comfortable and safe.
Timetable information and tickets can be obtained at Korean Rail travel centers
at major train stations in South Korea.
What kind of food
is available?
Whenever you think of trying multiple dishes, contrasting flavors, varied
textures and exotic ingredients, yet healthy and light food – it’s always good
to think about Korean food. The Korean meal is almost always accompanied by a
big bowl of hot soup or stew, and the classic meal contains a variety of
vegetables. Due to its geographical location the very essence of Japanese
cuisine can be found in Korean food. The most famous Korean dish is Kimchi.
Kimchi and doenjang paste made of soybeans are the best-known examples of Korean
fermented foods, and these have recently become highly valued for their
disease-prevention effects, Korea’s staple side dish served along with rice,
accompanies almost every meal. Korea has many different types of traditional
alcoholic drinks, with soju being the most popular. Other common drinks include
makgeolli and dong-dong-ju (both whitish colored drinks made from rice or
potatoes).
Is it safe
traveling around in South Korea?
South Korea is considered to be the safest country to live and travel in the
world. The country is always safe for its visitors than any other Asian
countries.
What about the
night life in South Korea?
If you are a night owl, Korea has a number of places for you to go. Although the
night life is not as extensive as in other countries, you can still find many
places to go to have fun. You will find here many restaurants, bars, and other
places that stay open late and attract many people interested in a night life
scene. Many of the areas also have a thriving scene during daylight hours for
shopping or other activities, but the night life scene is very different.
Using credit cards
in South Korea
ATM are ubiquitous, but most Korean ATMs don't accept foreign cards, only
special Global ATMs do. These can be found at airports and some subway stations
in major cities, as well as in many Family Mart convenience stores, so stock up
before heading to the countryside. Credit card acceptance, on the other hand, is
very good, and all but the very cheapest restaurants and motels will take Visa
and MasterCard. (It is illegal to refuse credit cards unless it's a very small
shop).
Net connectivity in
South Korea
South Korea is the world's most wired country and Internet cafes, known as PC
bang , are ubiquitous through the country. Many customers are there for gaming
but you're free to sit and type e-mails as well, typical charges are about W1000
to W2000/hour. Like anything, it may be more expensive in more "luxurious"
places. Also, snacks and drinks are available for purchase in most PC bangs. PC
bangs are often divided into smoking and non-smoking areas.
Telephone
connection in South Korea
South Korea's country code is 82.
South Korea does not have a GSM network, which means that roaming opportunities
are limited, although there are now both types of 3G networks (W-CDMA and
CDMA2000). Roaming onto these is possible in a limited number of cases, so check
with your operator.
LG TeleCom and SK Telecom offer prepaid mobile phone services (pre-paid
service, PPS) in South Korea. Incoming calls are free. Phones and prepaid
services can be acquired at any LG TeleCom and SK Telecom retail locations.
SK Telecom and KTF also offer mobile phone rental services, and some handsets
also support GSM SIM roaming. Both companies have outlets at the airports in
Seoul, Busan and Jeju and charges start from W2000/day. Reserve in advance via
Tour2Korea (the official Korea Tourism Organization site) for a discount and
guaranteed availability.
About the teaching job in South Korea
When the teaching
placement in South Korea is going to start? When should I land in Korea?
For teachers whose teaching placement is going to start 1st September onwards in
South Korean schools and Teacher training program in South Korea will be from
25th August to 29th August. So it is always recommended that you must land in
South Korea latest by 24th August.
For some teachers whose teaching assignment will start from 1st week of
September, the landing date would be 31st August (Depending on the start date of
the teaching assignment).
All the necessary information will be emailed to the teachers in due time.
What about the
airfare? When will it be reimbursed?
Yes your actual purchasing price (up to $1100) of the airfare for flight to
Korea shall be reimbursed by Employer within a month (30 days) upon working at
the school based on the economy class of the most direct flights available from
Employee’s residence to the Incheon International Airport in Korea.
Teachers coming from outside of Korea: A one-way ticket to Korea will be
reimbursed within a month (30 days) from working at the school. Upon completion
of Contract, one-way trip to the airport of return for either his/her home
country or another country of shorter distance will be provided when the trip
occurs within the first 10 days as of termination of employment.
Teachers in Korea: If Employee obtains his/her E2 visa by visiting the nearest
country from Korea, its round trip airfare is reimbursed by Employer within a
month (30 days)from working at the school. Upon completion of Contract, a
one-way airfare is provided pursuant to the foregoing 1-a.
Don’t forget to bring an official receipt from your travel agency or the print
out of the online receipt if you have booked the flight online.
What is the
advantage of working in a public school in South Korea?
Public schools are run by South Korean Government. Working in Public school is
always rewarding and teachers get the best working deal and opportunities there.
While working in public school teachers will be entitled to receive the
following facilities:
- Paid vacation of 14-20 days per year, Saturday and Sundays are off plus
all Korean national holiday.
- Salary ranges between 2.0-2.3 million KRW ($2100-$2450)
- Well furnished single occupancy accommodation
- 50% medical insurance
- 50% Pension plan
- 100% severance pay after the completion of the contract
- 300,000 won ($299) relocation allowance upon arrival
- Less than 22 working hours per week
- Working hours: 8.30am-4.30pm or 9.00am-5.00pm
- Class strength: 35 students
- Working with Korean co-teachers
- Only native English speaker in the school
- Will be teaching elementary/middle/high school students
Will I receive pick
up facility when I land in South Korea?
Yes you will be picked up from Incheon International Airport. You are requested
to email us your flight itinerary in the following format when you purchase the

Do schools provide
Visa and work permit?
No. The school will not provide the E2Visa and work permit. It will solely be
the teacher’s responsibility. The Visa and work permit will not cost them more
than $ 40 each. Your school should help you in every possible way to secure a
work permit.
What are the
documents that I need to send for my teaching placement in South Korean
Government School?
You would require sending the following documents to us:
- A formal resume
- An original or notarized copy of your Degree. Korean immigration office or
Korean ministry of Education will take either original/ notarized degree
certificate. Canadian teachers are required to notarize their degrees by the
Korean Consulate or public notary “Apostille”. But one must make one thing
sure that they bring the original certificates along with them as they may
need to be checked.
- Three original copies of sealed and enveloped university transcripts that
are stamped or signed by the university. You will need to send us two
transcripts and you will keep for the use of Korean consulate in your home
country.
- A clear photo copy of your passport.
- Original and notarized copy of your TEFL/TESOL/CELTA(100+Hours)
certificate.
- A notarized criminal record check. Canadian teachers need to notarize by
the Korean consulate or Public notary” Apostille”. It has become mandatory in
Korea to get your police criminal record check cleared by your local police
station or ministry of justice. Usually this is a cumbersome process. So it is
best advised to apply for your PCR as soon as possible.
- Self medical evaluation and an official medical certificate. You will be
provided with Self Medical Evaluation form and you can apply for your Visa
with Self Checked form. But upon arrival one need to go through the Official
Health Check in South Korea and your Visa can be cancelled based on the report
of the health check up.
- Two recent, colored passport sized photograph.
- Two reference letters mentioning referee’s phone numbers and address.
- Original Employment proof of your previous or current employer.
- Three signed copies of your employment contract.
Where can I do the
medical check up in South Korea?
There are a good number of Medical centers and Hospitals available in South
Korea where you can do your TBPE and HIV test. We have a long list. And we will
email you the list with details when you will arrive in South Korea.
When do I get my
first salary? And what are the terms and conditions?
Teachers will get their salary on the twenty fifth of each month. If this day
falls on a National Holiday, Saturday or Sunday, the salary will be paid on the
immediately preceding business day.
When a teacher has not worked a full month, salary for that month shall be paid
on a pro rata daily basis either from the first day or until the last day of
work.
If a teacher is absent from work without a prior approval, his or her salary for
that month shall be deducted by the amount calculated on a pro rata daily basis
for the number of unauthorized absent days.
Upon completion of a one-year contract, Employer shall pay the teacher an extra
30 days’ average wage as a severance pay for Employee’s continuous employment of
one year.
Employee shall not claim against Employer any compensation and/or payment other
than those provided for in Contract.
The category 1 Employee whose contract is renewed for a second term or
subsequent terms at the same school may be eligible for salary raise up to the
maximum GEPIK limit of 2,500,000 won by 100,000 won per year respectively. The
increase is at the discretion of Employer, neither automatic nor guaranteed,
according to Employee’s teaching performance and contributions made toward the
achievement of the educational goals of GPOE.
If a teacher obtains further qualifications such as a Masters degree or TESOL
certificate (with over 100 course-hours) during the contract term, if
applicable, he/she will be promoted to the next employment category (with
corresponding raise in salary) the month following the date of course
completion. However, promotions shall be limited to one pay category increase
per year. (ie. Category 3 to 2, or Category 2 to 1; not Category 3 to 1)
The Korean income tax (approx. 3% which is exempted for foreigners, except for
Canadians, for the first two employment years in Korea) and the national pension
contribution (approx. 9%, of which Employer pays for the half, refundable for
the US and Canadian citizens at the end of Contract term) and the national
health scheme (approx. 5%, of which Employer pays for the half) as required
under Korean law shall be withheld each month from Employee’s salary.
The pay scale is as follows; category one for 2.3 mill. KRW; category two for
2.1 mill. KRW ; category three for 2 mill. KRW)
Can I renew my
contract with the school? What is the procedure and what Extra benefit do I get
after the renewal?
The teaching contract may be renewed by a mutual written agreement between
Employer and Employee, provided that each renewed employment term is one (1)
year.
The written notification of renewal or termination of Employment shall be
provided two months (60 days) prior to the expiration of Contract.
In the case of renewal of this contract pursuant to the foregoing 1, Employee
shall be given a fourteen day (14) (weekend and national holidays inclusive)
additional home leave vacation period which is extra, beyond the 14 days’ yearly
paid leave. Home leave must be taken during the vacation periods not conflicting
with school schedules either just before or just after the contract year is
completed.
In the event renewing Employee travels to his/her home country, Employee will
be reimbursed for his/her round-trip airfare based on economy class air-fare of
the most direct flight available from Incheon to the airport nearest to
Employee’s residence within 2 weeks upon return to Korea.
In the event renewing Employee travels to another country with a shorter
distance than that of home country may be reimbursed for their round-trip
airfare pursuant to the foregoing 4.
In the event Employee does not travel to either his/her home country or another
country other than home pursuant to the foregoing 3, Employee will be given the
amount of money equivalent to the round-trip airfare within 2 weeks upon renewal
of Contract.
If Employee completes the Term of Employment without the intention to renew
and leaves Korea within 10 days from the expiration date, Employer shall provide
the airfare for Employee’s one way return flight to the employee’s home country
either in the form of reimbursement or direct purchase.
Do I get any
additional benefits while working in South Korea?
Employer shall provide Employee with medical insurance pursuant to The National
Health Insurance Act of Korea (The National Health Insurance Act states all
government employees will be liable for 50% of costs). If Employee has his/her
dependents living with him/her in Korea, Employer will also pay for health
insurance for them. Employee who is working in a designated rural area shall
be entitled to a paid allowance of 100,000 Korean won every month and additional
5 working days’ paid leave during the contract term.
Could you please
explain about all kinds of leave I am entitled to get?
Paid Leave
Employee shall be entitled to a paid leave for a total of fourteen (14) working
days during the term of the employment. Paid leave may be taken at any time
school is not in session, and must be approved by school principal at least 15
days in advance. Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and the Korean National
Holidays do not count as vacation days. If Employee renews the contract, up to 7
days of unused yearly paid leave may be rolled over to the new contract period.
This carried over paid leave may be used in the new contract period, but it may
not be rolled over into any subsequent contract period.
In case of a maternity leave, the first 60 calendar days shall be a paid leave
by Employer.
Sick Leave
Employee shall be entitled to a paid sick leave if an illness or injury prevents
him/her from performing the duties under this contract, provided, however, that
he/she obtains Employer’s prior consent.
When Employee takes a sick leave for more than seven (7) consecutive days
(inclusive of a National Holiday, Saturday and Sunday), Employee shall submit a
medical doctor’s report to Employer.
Employee’s paid sick leave during the Term of Employment shall not exceed
fifteen(15) calendar days. If Employee requires a sick leave for more than
fifteen (15) calendar days, Employee may take a longer sick leave without pay.
Employee’s sick leave is limited to thirty (30) calendar days in total including
paid and unpaid leave.
Special Leave
Employee may take a Special Leave for a number of days as set forth below for
each of the following events;
Seven consecutive calendar days for Employee’s marriage.(paid leave)
b. Seven consecutive calendar days for the death of Employee’s parents or
spouse; five (5) consecutive calendar days for the death of Employee’s
child.(paid Leave)
Ninety (90) calendar days for a female Employee’s maternity leave.(paid leave
for 60 days)
In case of damage to Employee’s residence in a natural disaster: for the period
Employer deems necessary according to the degree of damage.(paid leave for 60
days)
If Employee is prosecuted for involvement in a criminal offense, Employer has
the authority to put Employee on a prosecution leave. (without pay)
Rules regarding
termination
Employer may terminate or cancel this Contract upon occurrence of any one of the
following events;
If Employee violates the laws of the Republic of Korea.
If Employee fails to perform or unsatisfactorily perform any of the duties
stipulated in this contract.
If Employee fails to perform continuously his/her duties for more than a week
without any excuse.
If any of the information provided in Employee’s application is found to
intentionally false or inaccurate.
If it is determined that the Employee is prevented from or incapable of
performing his/her duties for a medical reason, whether it is a physical or
psychological ailment.(If requested by Employer, Employee must be immediately
available for a medical examination.)
In the event that this contract is terminated the school principal shall give
the employee a written letter of dismissal notice 15 days prior to the
termination of the contract, and pay Employee a pro rated salary based on the
number of days Employee actually worked. Employee shall be responsible for
his/her return trip to his/her home country. Employee’s visa will subsequently
be cancelled.
In the event of termination of this Contract, within 6 months of this contract
Employee shall immediately refund the airfare to Employer .After 6 months of
continuous employment or longer, Employee is not required to repay this airfare.
If Employee is sentenced to a term of imprisonment (or any other more severe
penalty), Employee shall automatically be dismissed and Employer will not
provide any financial compensation.
What If I do not
want to continue with the teaching assignment?
If under any circumstances you decide not to carry on with the teaching
assignment with the school, you must give Employer a sixty (60) day prior
written notice of resignation stating a date of and a reason for resignation.
In all cases of Employee’s resignation without fulfilling the full year term,
the airfare for his/her return trip shall be borne by Employee, and his/her E2
visa shall be cancelled.
In case of the termination of Contract within six months, Employee shall
immediately pay back 100% of the one-way airfare and the settlement allowance of
300,000won to Employer. If Employee works for six months or more during the term
of employment, Employee’s obligation to pay back the airfare shall be waived by
Employer.
